Lost a star because 3 of the 4 screws holding the top plate to the screw mechanism were missing or were loose and fell out of the box and one rivet was not hammered down. I bought replacement screws at Home Depot and hammered the rivet into place. It may seem like a lot to do but it took minutes and the press was less than $90 and works so I’m happy. It’s sturdy and works for my amateur bookbinding needs.

This press is a jewel. It is compact and made of quality materials of sufficient thickness, but light enough to move around if needed. It easily produces great pressure and releases with a few turn of the dial lever. For years I struggled with C-Clamps and MDF boards, but this is a great improvement.

This thing is heavy, and made of solid steel. Works absolutely great besides the first hiccup I had. Out of the box, I put some grease on the slides, screwed down the plate to get it to spread and it jammed. I had to take it an apart to get it working again.

The press moves up and down smoothly and evenly, and the screws attaching the main shaft to the underside of the presser plate are fully recessed, so my main concerns with this reading negative reviews have been addressed. Would recommend to others, especially if it goes on sale.

A similar functioning forged iron nipping press costs an extra two zeros. Literally, got this on sale for $60 made of nice, heavy steel, brand new. An iron traditional model with the same pressing dimensions goes for $2000 new or $600 rusted out used. btw the iron nippers with the round crank only open 3” To get the same height opening as this model requires the iron nipper with the t- handle.
